HATHA YOGA

 

Hatha yoga provides a safe and gentle system that does not require great flexibility or stamina. Hatha Yoga consists of non-strenuous bends, lifts, and twists performed with specific breathing patterns while focusing on breathing and meditation through the movements. Hatha yoga is recommended for active seniors, anyone recovering from long-term illness, fractures or those that simply prefer a gentler style of yoga. No prior experience required. *FREE to FIREHOUSE/LA JOLLA YMCA MEMBERS. Some proven benefits of Hatha Yoga are:

  • Increased mobility

  • Loosens stiff, frozen joints.

  • Strengthens and limbers the muscles, tendons and ligaments.

  • Improved circulation.

  • Increases blood supply to the head, arms and legs

  • Normalizes blood pressure

  • Eases the strain on the heart.

SVAROOPA YOGA

This style of yoga is swiftly gaining in popularity and has also been called "Bliss yoga" or "Yoga for your back". Through this yoga practice a core opening naturally occurs and you are gently guided to rest into the awareness of your own being. This brings about a greater sense of being centered and grounded in the present moment because the muscle tension in your body is released.

If you have a lot of stress or chronic neck and back pain this class would do wonders for you! Svaroopa® Yoga is uniquely designed to soothe your mind, revitalize your body and energize your spirit from morning till night. These classes teach how you can begin to make a profound difference in your daily well-being.

POWER YOGA
An hour-and-a-half complete yoga workout, integrating the breath with the practice of asanas. This class focuses on strength building, endurance, and flexibility, while promoting body awareness, inner stillness and energy flow. Create expansion of your range of motion in body, mind and spirit. Concluding with a 15-minute Savasana (resting pose) and self-healing visualization. Power yoga can be challenging at times as it strives further increase strength and endurance of a healthy individual. This class is geared for the young to older adult who are physically fit without injuries.

PILATES
Pilates is an hour long floor-based program of exercises which will benefit your flexibility, improve posture as well as back and abdominal strength by stressing proper body alignment and strengthening of all of the muscles. This class is works for all ages and no prior experience is required.

TAI CHI
An art evolving from ancient Chinese culture, Tai Chi involves meditation, physical exercise and martial arts. Sequences of postures are performed without stopping, while muscles are relaxed to leave participants feeling settled and relaxed. Benefits of Tai Chi can help you reduce stress by practicing slow, flowing movements and warming up with simple, effective stretching movements as well as improved balance and muscle tone through the slow, flowing movements. Previous experience with Tai Chi is not needed. Please wear soft-soled shoes and comfortable clothing that allows for easy movement.

CHINESE ACUPRESSURE MASSAGE
This massage technique works with the channels of energy in the body and in the muscles to alleviate pain, relax muscles, tendons and moves energy "chi" through the body. Marla McBride HHP is a holistic health practitioner and an instructor at the Pacific College of Oriental Medicine.

Performing Arts Center

is a historical landmark, located in the  heart of the picturesque seaside village of La Jolla.

A classic mission-style building, the Firehouse is a 6,000 square foot Community Center with several rooms available for meetings and special events.

The historic and spacious Engine Room is ideal for Special Events (Dances, Parties and formal Board Meetings) and is gaining fame for its San Diego Junior Theatre Productions. We offer activities and classes for Kids and Adults, and Specialty Programs for all ages.
